Fine Instrument | 1931 Vincenzo Sannino Violin

This violin was made by Vincenzo Sannino in 1931. Sannino was a self-taught violin-maker born in 1879 in Naples, Italy. Later in his career, in around the 1920's he moved to Rome to further his learning. Despite moving to Rome his later instruments were still labelled 'Naples.' Sannino had a particularly creative and artistic style of violin-making. He did not make purely in the Neapolitan style but also sought inspiration from different regions of Italy & northern Europe. He passed away in 1969 leaving a truly prolific output of work with an estimated 700-800 violins, 50 violas and 70-80 cellos.

This instrument has a bright, bold and classic Italian sound. It boasts outstanding projection and a fast response time. The tone is focused and clear creating an excellent balance between both the high and low registers. This instrument would be suitable for tertiary level study, advancing to professional soloists and chamber musicians. This violin is currently fitted with a Pirastro Oliv E string and Evah Pirazzi Gold on the A, D and G string. This string combination adds a level of complexity, depth and warmth to the overall brilliance of this instrument.

Fine Instrument | 1889 Eugenio Degani Violin

This violin was made by Eugenio Degani in 1889. Degani is often considered the father of the 'modern Venetian school of violin making.' He was born in Melara, Italy in 1842 where he trained with his father Domenico. In 1867 Degani opened his own workshop in Montagnana and worked there until 1888 when he relocated to Venice and remained there until he passed away in 1901. His instruments exhibit a skilled, careful and exact maker. He did on occasion copy existing violin models, however his own personal models were often slightly long and featured a number of unique characteristics.

Overall this violin has a very sweet, and powerful sound. It has outstanding projection and a fast response time. The richness heard throughout the violins core sound perfectly balances the upper and lower registers. This violin would be suitable for tertiary level study and the advancing to professional level soloist or chamber musician. This instrument is currently fitted with Pirastro Obligato violin strings which add a touch of warmth to this instrument's naturally powerful sound.

Fine Instrument | 1948 Anselmo Gotti Violin

This violin was made by Anselmo Gotti in Ferrara in 1948. Gotti was born in 1902 and moved to Ferrara in 1922 to learn the trade of violin-making from Ettore Soffritti. Once Soffritti died in 1928, Gotti completed the unfinished instruments that Soffritti left behind. In 1930 Gotti moved to Austria & undertook some repair work with Anton Wittman in Vienna. In 1931 he moved back to Ferrara & completed the unfinished instruments of Monterumici after he passed away. In 1933 he began work on his own instruments. This instrument comes with a certificate of authenticity from Florian Leonhard.

Overall this violin has a very bright and well-rounded sound with outstanding projection. It has a fast response time and a beautifully clear and focused tone. This instrument would be suitable for tertiary level study, the advancing to professional level soloist or chamber musician. It is currently fitted with Evah Pirazzi Gold strings to add a level of warmth and complexity to the overall focus and brightness of this instrument.

A Brief Journey Through Italian Violin Making

When it comes to violins, many people have heard of the instruments made by Antonio Stradivarius (1644-1737), Bartolomeo Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu (1698-1744) and their hometown of Cremona in Italy. These two violinmakers are largely considered the best violinmakers the world has ever seen and their instruments are still widely coveted today, eligible to be played on by only the very best musicians (who have a wealthy donor or a spare few million). Despite their outstanding reputation, Cremonese instruments do not represent the violin-making style of Italy as a whole. Italy has an incredibly rich history in violin-making and some outstanding craftsman were making in various areas of the country over the years.

Rather than making exact copies of existing instruments, Italian luthiers continued to combine innovative notions with the more traditional aspects of the craft from their respective local areas. The Italians are renowned for their creativity, originality, versatility and vision when it comes to violin-making. Italian luthiers have constantly pushed the boundaries of violinmaking and some of the best instruments in the world are from Italy and believe it or not… do not have a 'Strad' or 'del Gesu' label.
